Plus Sizing Explained: Bigger Rims Without Changing Diameter
What Is Plus Sizing?
Plus sizing means going to a larger rim diameter while using a lower-profile tire to maintain the same overall tire diameter. This preserves your speedometer accuracy and odometer readings while changing the look and handling characteristics.
Plus Size Levels
- Plus Zero: Same rim size, different tire width/profile. Used for changing handling characteristics without changing rims.
- Plus One: One inch larger rim, lower profile tire. The most common upgrade. Example: 225/60R16 → 235/50R17
- Plus Two: Two inches larger rim. Example: 225/60R16 → 245/40R18. More aggressive look, sportier handling.
Benefits
- Better cornering and handling (shorter sidewall = less flex)
- More aggressive appearance
- Better brake cooling (larger wheels = more airflow)
- No speedometer recalibration needed
Trade-offs
- Harsher ride (less sidewall to absorb bumps)
- Higher cost (larger wheels + low-profile tires)
- More susceptible to pothole damage
- Potentially higher road noise
