How It Works

Enter your wheel width, diameter, and offset to see all compatible tire sizes. The calculator uses the industry-standard rule that tire section width should be within 1 inch of the wheel width for optimal fitment.

Green (Recommended) sizes are within +/-1 inch of wheel width — the ideal range for safety and performance. Yellow (Acceptable) sizes are +/-1.5 inches — they will fit but may not be optimal.

Offset affects how the wheel sits in the wheel well but does not change which tire sizes physically fit the rim.

How to Read a Tire Size

A tire size like P265/70R17 breaks down as:

  • P — Passenger tire (LT = Light Truck)
  • 265 — Section width in millimeters
  • 70 — Aspect ratio (sidewall height is 70% of width)
  • R — Radial construction
  • 17 — Rim diameter in inches

Flotation sizes like 33x12.50R15 use inches: 33" overall diameter × 12.5" width on a 15" rim.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what tire width fits my wheel?

The general rule is that a tire's section width (in inches) should be 0 to 2 inches wider than the wheel width. For example, an 8-inch-wide wheel works well with tires that are 8 to 10 inches wide (approximately 205mm to 255mm). Going too narrow causes poor handling; going too wide risks the tire unseating from the rim.

What does wheel offset mean?

Wheel offset is the distance in millimeters between the wheel's mounting surface and its centerline. Positive offset means the mounting surface is toward the outside (street side), common on front-wheel-drive cars. Negative offset means it's toward the inside (suspension side), common on lifted trucks. Zero offset means the mounting surface is at the wheel's centerline.

Can I use a tire that's wider than recommended for my rim?

Using a slightly wider tire (within the acceptable range shown in yellow) is generally safe and can provide a wider contact patch for better grip. However, going too wide (red zone) is dangerous — the tire bead may not seat properly on the rim, risking a blowout. Always stay within the manufacturer's recommended range.

Does changing offset affect tire fitment?

Offset doesn't change which tire sizes fit the wheel, but it affects whether the wheel-and-tire combination fits inside the fender. More negative offset pushes the wheel outward, which can cause fender rubbing. More positive offset tucks the wheel inward, potentially causing clearance issues with suspension components.
